The Bride and Groom Fund

A young woman, barely twenty, walks into a small mitpachat shop.
“Which ones are on sale, please?” she asks the saleswoman, her voice a soft, shy whisper.
The woman points to a back shelf marked with clearance stickers. The girl stands there for a long time, fingers grazing the fabric, eyes searching. Finally, she approaches the counter with a simple gray wrap. “This one is slightly frayed at the seam,” she says tentatively. “Is there any way you could lower the price just a little more?”
The saleswoman’s heart goes out to the girl. “Are you a kallah?” she asks gently.
The girl’s face flushes. “Yes,” she admits.
The shopkeeper leans forward and hands her a slip of paper. “I want you to call this number. It’s an organization called Meirim Lachaim. Don’t be ashamed. Just call. They are the kindest people in the world.” The bride’s eyes fill. As she reaches for her phone, the saleswoman adds, “And the mitpachat? It’s a wedding gift. From me.”

Marriage is one of the greatest and most joyous milestones in a young person’s life, but for an orphan, that joy is often shadowed by a staggering mountain of fear and expenses. How do you plan a wedding—even the simplest one—when you have nothing?
